| Paula
Velarde (born: 1941)
Paula Velarde has had an extensive
career as a professional artist and Ascot Studios will be representing
her throughout 2010. Her paintings evolve from direct observations
of the vitality of the landscape. As Paula explains, "I
am one of a small number of painters who brave the elements
to work 'en plein air', in all weather and seasons... The rugged,
ever-changing landscapes of the North of England are a constant
multi-coloured inspiration"
The rich patterns and textures in her
work are enhanced by vibrant and lively colours, using a range
of expressive water colours, acrylics, oils and pastels. She
is undoubtedly influenced by her research of the Scottish Colourists
and French Impressionists. Earlier in her career, Paula studied
printmaking in Paris with Stanley William Hayter, CBE, one of
the most significant printmakers of the 20th Century. Among
the artists he is credited with influencing are Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.
